Paint is the best software for spriting in my opinion.
All I ever see with GIMP/PS sprites are weird glows and scratches that look terrible :x
Paint sprites are legit <3

Paint is good for fusions, but gimp is good for recoloring. I will post a link for downloads of both in a second...

How to make goldens (my way)
1. Open the sprite
2. Go to images > mode > RGB
3. Go to colors > colorize
4. Set hue to 34, saturation to 100, and lightness to -15. Press OK
5. Go to colors > brightness/contrast. Adjut these until the sprite looks gold. (every sprite is different) press OK.
6. Right Click on the background of the sprite, then press layers > duplicate layer.
7. Go to (sorry, don't remember what it's called) but click one of the bars at the top of the screen. It should be in the middle-right side of the gimp program. At the bottom, there should be something that says Alpha to Logo. Click it, then click glowing hot.
8. Change the number (it should be preset to 50) to 5 or 10. Click ok.
9. Delete the layer that is just a plain black background, then delete the layer with the Shadow looking thing.
10. Click on the layer with the glowing effect on it. Now go to colors > colorize, and use the same numbers as before. Note - you may need to reorder the layers, making it so the picture of lugia is on top.

Congratulations, you made a golden sprite!
